Modern Penthouse in New York Gets Green Treatment

I’m a green fan, and when I say that it means that I care about the environment and I try to do as little harm as I can. Seeing this new penthouse in Lower Manhattan, downtown New York, I realized that I can do more. I can have my own green spot right in my newly renovated apartment. But back to our 3,100 sq-ft penthouse in New York, which is owned by Matthew Blesso, 35, a real estate developer. The guy managed to turn it into something that “has life”, with the help of two Yale professors, the architect Joel Sanders and the landscape architect Diana Balmori. The investment was close to $1 million but bringing nature into your apartment is not cheap. What I love the most about it is the stunning rooftop garden with an outdoor shower (how cool is this?), the drip irrigation system, the walnut table, the way they mixed plants and wood (walls, floors, etc). I simply love what they did with the vertical bathroom wall that has peace lily, peperomia and prayer plants in it. It’s like I can smell harmony … don’t you? -via ApartmentTherapy

Designer's Guide to Selecting Kitchen Appliances When Remodeling

When remodeling a kitchen, one of you biggest investments should be your appliances. There are so many brands, it is hard to know what to choose, but be sure to consult a qualified appliance showroom, not your local hardware store. Better yet, let your kitchen designer guide you to the showroom they use. This will provide a much smoother process for the designer, and will benefit you too. The designer gets the benefit of working with the same appliance dealership and sales person, who knows her clientele and what they are looking for. This way your designer can call in advance of your appointment (the mark of a good salesman is one you need an appointment to see) and let the sales person know a bit about your project, and most importantly, your budget. You are benefited several ways. First, the sales person already knows some of the details of your project, and you don't have to repeat yourself for the umpteenth time, and knows what kind of appliances to show you. Second, the sales person will have an idea of what your budget is for appliances, and because of his relationship with your designer, will not try to bully or over sale you on more expensive items you don't need. Shopping for appliances this way benefits everyone, and will take a lot of stress off the consumer. There are literally hundreds of appliance manufactures, and it would be impossible to list them all, so to try to help keep things simple, the comparisons in this article will be mostly on American appliance companies from low-end to high-end. For ease of comparison, all appliances will be quoted in similar styles and stainless steel finishes. Continue reading "Designer's Guide to Selecting Kitchen Appliances When Remodeling" »

Portable Bathroom Vanity Basin by Maja Ganszyniec

Most bathroom vanities today are created as one solid piece where once it place, it is a fixture in the bathroom. Designer Maja Ganszyniec has created this bathroom vanity design where the wash basin is "old fashioned". In years past, people used portable basins to wash their face and generally freshen up. This design allows for the stone basin to be picked up, moved around, and emptied by hand. Though it would be much different not having a drain inside the basin, it would provide for some different ways to clean and sterilize the basin. Via.
