Take Out - Furniture with Portable Valises

Take Out is a brilliant idea of storage furniture, which resembles a traditional chest of drawers with the exception that the drawers have been replaced by portable briefcases. This makes it possible for each briefcase to be taken to the next room or even on a longer trip. Take Out is ideal for the storage of, for example, toys or tools – things that are used in more than one place. The piece of furniture consists of an outer shell made of MDF board, aluminum shelves, steel legs and plastic briefcases by Plasticase. The basic idea can be modified into various shapes and sizes. For the Sauma exhibition, Klaus Aalto has made a series of three different sized sets of drawers. Although the prototypes are intended for mass production, they could also be turned into a series of unique pieces of furniture with briefcases made of different materials.

Modular Timber Extension - The Salt House

After we just presented and interesting way to Add an Additional Room To Your Apartment today here is another interesting alternative, but this time to add an additional space to your house. London based architectural practice Turner Castle has unveiled a unique extension and remodeling of a 1950s end-terrace house in South London, referred to for its unusual use of timber cladding as the Slat House. The modular timber extension wraps around the house and peeps through the adjacent trees of the rear garden and provides access onto the side terrace. The driving design concept was the extension as a lightweight ‘box’. Timber cladding was specified as a practical necessity to reduce the load of the building on its new foundations, but also for aesthetic purposes, to harmonize the extension with its wooden surroundings. The width of the red cedar panels defined a module by which all window and door openings were determined. This rigor adds to the strong exterior appearance of the building. Large windows are situated at both ends of the building, visually connecting the new building to the garden. - Via - Coolboom

OUTrial House in Poland by KWK PROMES

A house covered with grass? That doesn’t sound like a bad idea, is it? Dubbed the OUTrial House it was built in Poland by KWK PROMES Archtects by carving out on the hillside. The shapes aren’t all that modern but the fact that you have a great scenery to surround it, adds to the Wow factor of this atypical atrium house. Owned by a rock musician, the 1,440 sqm house also features a recording studio on the upper part, so I guess there’s plenty of inspiration … Like it? [via ArchDaily]

Out with the Boring Bookcase, In with Cool Decorative Shelving

Here are two distinctly different decorative shelving / bookcase units that can add some visual pizzazz to what is often a sterile and boring item. First the "Sir" from Emmemobili offers an original design by Ferruccio Laviani that uses orthogonal planes to create storage spaces with a most unusual shape. The Sir can be paired if desired and used against a wall or free standing to act as a well decorated room divider. Available in various wood veneers or lacquer. My second selection is Elle Decorations pick for "best new shelves" which combines "simply stunning shelves with functional sculpture". The design team of Ludovica & Roberto Palomba conspired on the Sveva from Italian based Sawaya & Moroni which can be used as a bookcase if you have a lack of decorative accessories. As with the Sir, Sveva would be perfect to dress up a wall in need of help or free standing in a room to break up adjacent living areas.
