Riding Out Hurricane Ike in Houston Texas

As many of you are aware Will and I both live in Houston, Texas. Hurricane Ike came through the coast of Texas on early Saturday morning. Will happened to be out of town, but I was at home "riding the storm out". I had a few elderly family members with me that I was caring for as well during the time. I had a total of five people in my house with me. Some of the people had limited mobility which added another element to their personal safety needs. About 2:00am Saturday morning we started experiencing heavy winds. In fact, the wind was so strong that it was howling outside. I had heard the term howling before, but did not really understand what that meant until I experienced it first hand. The winds got up to about ESF: 110 / Wood Bedroomsmiles per hour for the storm. The wind was a bit less when it hit my home in Houston since the city is about 50 miles north of the coast line. At 2:00 am the eye of the storm was over Galveston Island. The storm was moving 14 miles per hour. Thus, I would experience the eye of the storm in about 3 ½ hours and then several more hours of the back side of the storm. Custom Furniture Made from Car Parts

Jake Chop Shop is a company that creates interesting pieces of furniture by using pieces of cars. As you can see from the pictures below, the pink one is the 1960 Chevy Impala Bed, and I can say that it looks very good compared with an old boring bed. The bed also has storage space in engine compartment, just open the hood. This kind of custom furnitures is completely innovative concept in home furnishing and decor, and I’m pretty sure that a talented interior designer would create an awesome bedroom with this kind of furniture. - Via - Woohome & Likecool

Tavi The Magazine Table

Tavi Table designed by Adele Rotella is a great example of how the furniture evolves. Now as you already know people like to have multifunctional stuff, and a great example of that are the cellphones. Now in the furniture industry to be competitive you must product something new and at least interesting. The Tavi Table combines the functional attributes of a coffee table and Magazine Rack. The table is supported by standard legs on one side, and modeled velum on the other. The velum leg is where you stow away your magazines which can be sorted thru from the transparent glass top. - Via - Yankodesign

Besana's Fly Sideboard Understands the Stares

I am impressed to say the least with Besana of Italy and their glamorous furniture and wardrobe collections. The Italians do things with a flair that seems to be indigenous to their homeland and their high level of pride and craftsmanship. One piece that caught my eye was the Fly sideboard with its hypnotic door fronts made of teak woof mitered at 45 degree angles that seems to float on minimal metal feet. Tarcisio Colzani's design includes beveled door handles and matchbook veneers that keep the face of the Fly sideboard free of clutter and your eyes glued to it.

Small Apartment but Flexible by Setmund Leung

Designer Setmund Leung presents an apartment that features sliding panels on rails that you can use to partition the space to your preference. These small but flexible apartments provide practical living dimensions that cater to all their needs. The different rooms are divided and hidden behind sliding doors set on a track. This mobile system allows you to close off any rooms not in use so the main space stays open. The same track also allows you to move the rooms around. The only rooms that have to stay put are the kitchen and bathroom for plumbing reasons. - Via - Productdose

Five Franklin Place by Unstudio

Five Franklin is a 20-story building designed by Ben van Berkel of Unstudio that will be located at 5 Franklin Place, between Broadway and Sixth in Tribeca. The building pays homage to TriBeCa’s iconic cast-iron aesthetic, with a facade constructed from reflective black metal bands of varying widths. This facade treatment offers privacy with maximum light and views within each residence. The metal bands twist like ribbons, wrapping Five Franklin Place with terraces and balconies, employing this decorative element as a functional tool. The interiors of the 55 residences are designed in three distinct apartment types: Loft Residences, City Residences and Sky Penthouses, each with their own distinct architectural features, colour palate and choice of materials. Potential buyers will need to shell out between $2 million and $16 million for one of the 55 residences, comprised of apartments, duplex lofts, or duplex townhouses. You can see more details about this project here. - Via
